Lowell Public will open up with two options: in-person and virtual. All parents must apply for in-person otherwise your child will be automatically enrolled in virtual school. If your child is in the virtual school they will be responsible for their own learning. They may or may not have a Lowell Public School teacher assigned to them as a “coach”. The coach may be responsible for many children, more than a traditional classroom because they will be at home and there will be no face to face meetings with parents or students.
Another major change is that as of right now bussing will not be provided for students in grades 7 and 8.
Here are the dates to remember:
· August 19 – Forms to apply for in-person will be made available
· August 27 – Last day for families to submit their application for in-person
· September 4 – Families will be notified of their child’s placement
· September 17 – First day of school
Virtual School:
Virtual school consists of the kids using an online platform (similar to iReady) where the teachers “coach” the students. The platform being used has not been determined yet. The online platform will be managed by the corporation running the online platform. Students will work at their own pace, but will have to submit work and connect with teachers, though teachers will act as coaches only. Students will be placed in a virtual school automatically if their families do not apply for in-person.
In-Person School:
In-person school will run with social distancing and quite a few changes. Students will be required to wear masks, will eat lunch/breakfast in their classes, will sit at desks 6 feet apart, will not move from class to class (the teachers will switch, kids will remain in their in their classes throughout the day with the exception of designated mask breaks).
Because kids need to be socially distanced, each school will have a limit to the amount of kids who will be accepted for in-person. If your child does not get into your home school (like the Wang) then their name will be put into a lottery system and your child will be placed into another school that may have space. This lottery system does not guarantee that your child will still get a spot in-person, however.
Several groups of students will be given priority for in-person where each category below has a weight assigned to it. The more weight, the more likely your child is to be placed into in-person if you apply. The list below indicates students who will be given priority for in-person:
· Students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)
· Students identified with a 504 Plan (for learning related accommodations)
· Students identified for McKinney Vento services these are students that are deemed homeless (https://nche.ed.gov/mckinney-vento/)
· Students identified as English Learners (ELs)
· Students in entry grades of each level (K-2; 5th grade; 9th grade)
· Families who have more than one child enrolled in Lowell Public Schools
· Students of Lowell Public Schools personnel
This means that if your child does not fall into one of the above categories, and you want them in-person, they will not have priority and may not get a set in-person. If this is the case, your child will be enrolled in the virtual school discussed above.
Let me know if you have any questions!
